Doctor Says Closing OR At CCH Was Inevitable

The closure of the operating room at the Charlotte County Hospital is inevitable.

That from Chief of Staff at the Saint John Regional, Dr. John Dornan.

“Right now, we have about five people working down there, maintaining a full OR (operating room), and the number of suregeries that we’re doing down there under general anesthetic and local anesthetic have been decreasing steadily over the last number of years.”

He says it doesn’t make sense to put resources at the Charloote County Hospital when it’s very expensive to maintain, and equal or even better surgical care can be provided at other institutions.

As for utilizing the space at the Hospital for something else, Dr. Dornan says there is no set plan, but he is sure others will be looking into what can be done.

The operating room at the Charlotte County Hospital is set to close, permanently, on August 8th. Five staff, including four nurses and an environmental service employee have been given notice of a lay-off.
