Dire Warning About Future Of Home Care In Province

A priority for the New Brunswick Home Support Association is to see home care workers get paid more.

Board chair Tina Learmonth says the average age of a home care worker in the province is 55 and that doesn’t bode well for the future.

Learmonth says it’s tough to attract young people when the average wage is $13.40 an hour.

She says after doing research, entry level should pay around $15.50 an hour and points out the home care support workers are the foundation of the home care system because they do the heavy lifting and if they’re not there, the provincial government will not succeed with its Home First plan to keep seniors in their own homes for as long as possible.
