DFO extends elver fishery closure

The closure of the lucrative baby eel fishery has been extended another 45 days.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans closed the elver fishery on April 15th because of pouching and violence on the water.

DFO says they’re going to do a conservation review of the fishery.

They’ve made 110 arrests since the closure and seized lots of gear and five vehicles.

The closure has drawn criticism from opposition MP’s, who say it’s not fair to law-abiding harvesters.
