DFO Announces Efforts To Protect North Atlantic Right Whales

Following the death of a New Brunswick fisherman who was helping to disentangle a whale, both the American and British agencies responsible for whale rescues have suspended operations.

The agencies want to review their emergency responses after Joe Howlett died Monday during a rescue off the Acadian Peninsula.

At the same time, new efforts to help protect the North Atlantic Right whale population have been announced by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The shipping and fishing industries are being told to report any whale sightings and mariners are being asked to reduce speeds in key shipping lanes.

The DFO says it is also continuing to work with partners to better understand what caused the recent deaths of at least seven whales.
