Desire For Pets Increases In Pandemic

In this pandemic, it appears many people have been turning to pets for comfort.

Executive Director for the Greater Moncton SPCA Dan Fryer says there are now fewer animals available, “Initially, we saw this massive, huge demand for adoptions and for our foster programs. People are at home and they recognized the benefits of having an animal at home. So the demand was huge.”

Fryer says adoptions for cats have plateaued, but there just aren’t enough dogs.

“We just don’t have enough dogs locally. There have been a lot of issues, not just here in this district, but also across the country and in North America, where there is just so much demand for dogs because people suddenly remembered the value of having pets in the home,” Fryer says.

He says the good news is, many of animals adopted in the past year haven’t been returned to the shelter after some employees have returned to their workplace.
