Almost two decades of hard work is paying off for at least two north end residents, as they celebrate the funding coming together for a $17 million community centre.
Wendy Nason has been living in the area for more than 20 years, and she says it was a lot of hard work to get to where they are today.
“Meetings, and community sessions and getting input from people throughout the years,” says Nason. “Our community is young and old, and lots of different cultural backgrounds, so we just have a lot of faith that people will be coming out in droves.”
Another resident, Jeff Reath says he’s particularly looking forward to the multi-purpose community rooms, adding he would commonly hear people asking if there was community space available for a variety of events, or needs.
“And we just don’t have that, so I’m looking forward to that multi-purpose aspect of it, I really am,” says Reath. “My kids are grown, they won’t use the splash pad, but I’ll use the gym, I’ll use the walking track, I like the ideas there. I think it’s really about having community centre room.”
He was asked if he had any concerns over whether the new 35,000 square foot facility on Twin Oaks Drive would be big enough for such a fast growing community.
Reath responded by chuckling, and saying that’s the nature of the north end, adding “they’ve got expandability, the plan is built to expand, the infrastructure is being built so that they can build larger, wider, taller, whatever it might take in the future.”
