A powerful hurricane is pounding New Brunswick and municipalities need to activate their emergency preparedness plans.
That’s the focus of a provincewide emergency preparedness exercise happening Wednesday called Brunswick Alpha 2018.
Geoffrey Downey with New Brunswick EMO says about 100 municipalities will take part in this one-day exercise to test their emergency response plans.
“For example, in Bathurst, the Red Cross is going to be opening a shelter,” says Downey. “A community like Saint John, just having gone through the flood, they probably don’t feel the need to do anything quite like that. They’ve already had that capability tested.”
More emergency preparedness exercises like this were one of the recommendations made in the 2017 ice storm report.
Downey says a lot of planning has gone into this one-day exercise, which he hopes will turn into an annual event.
