Codiac RCMP prepare for potential encampments

As warmer weather arrives, Codiac RCMP are getting ready for the closure of Moncton’s two winter homeless shelters at the end of this month.

At Monday’s regular meeting, Superintendent Ben Jolette told city council the force is preparing for the potential of more outdoor encampments.

“Recently we met with Moncton bylaw enforcement to prepare exactly what we will be doing working in partnership with them,” he noted.

“We are making sure that we have intelligence-led patrols but to also be ready because this is not the first summer.”

He said Mounties will be visible this summer and will have a concrete plan to deal with any encampments as incidents arise.

Jolette also noted how Codiac RCMP recently met with downtown business owners and other stakeholders about issues facing the community such as crime, open-air drug use and homelessness.

He told council he looks forward to organizing resources and to work at finding specific solutions.
