Codiac RCMP handed out 61 tickets for motor vehicle offences as part of a distracted driving crackdown and over the long weekend.
31 tickets were issued on August 3rd for distracted driving.
Staff Sergeant Eric Larose says many drivers claimed they were just holding the cellphone and not using it.
He says any driver holding a phone or electronic device is considered to be using it according to the law.
30 more drivers were ticketed over the New Brunswick day weekend for a variety of offences including speeding, and distracted driving.
Codiac RCMP will be continuing to focus attention on distracted driving for the remainder of August.
Under the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act, the fine for distracted driving is $172.50 and a driver loses three points from their driver’s licence.
