Codiac RCMP Getting Back On Track After Traumatic Events Of June 2014

Codiac RCMP is hitting their stride again after the traumatic events of June 2014.

Superintendent Paul Beauchesne delivered the Officer In Charge Report for 2015 to the Codiac Regional Policing Authority last night.

He says 2015 was a significant year for the RCMP in Moncton.

“We had the MacNeil recommendations, we take those very seriously, and the implementation of that,” says Beauchesne. “So what we’ve basically had to do, and the theme of that year if you remember from Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, was back to the basics.”

Beauchesne says it was also about addressing the recommendations from the MacNeil report after the June 2014 shootings.

He says the new system will be encrypted because when people can listen in, it can affect operations.

“So it’s mainly in those contexts, it’s not to hide from anything, it’s about just being effective in terms of responding to a major incident,” says Beauchesne.

As well, slowly but surely, Codiac RCMP is making progress towards a new Headquarters building according to Beauchesne.

At last night’s CRPA meeting, he said different stakeholders are coming together to determine the needs of policing for all three municipalities.

Beauchesne says the new HQ will have to house all the people needed to do the job properly.

“We have at this time 204 employees, so we’re going to have to house that,” says Beauchesne. “But we’re also going to have to be strategic and say “Okay if that building is going to be for the next 10 or 15 years, what kind of population increases, what kind of growth is going to be necessary so that when you build something you’re ready for the future?”

Beauchesne admitted no land had been chosen for the Headquarters yet, and it was still in the planning stages but they are hoping to have it ready to go by 2019.
