Coalition For Pay Equity Encouraged By Promises From NDP, Green Party

The Coalition for Pay Equity is encouraged by pledges from the NDP and Green Party to implement pay equity legislation for the private sector.

Executive Director Johanne Perron says the governing Liberals made progress in Crown corporations, but are still short of their goal for the private sector.

She is looking forward to hearing what promises the Liberals will make this time.

“We don’t want to have the same promise repeated, of course, because it didn’t work once, it won’t work twice,” says Perron.

She argues pay equity legislation would be good for businesses.

“Because they will have clear guidelines, good tools, and training that would be made available,” says Perron. “But it would be good for employees who would then see their right to equal pay for work of equal value respected.”

Perron says they haven’t heard anything during the election campaign so far from the Progressive Conservatives about private sector pay equity legislation.
