Clearing Up Confusion After Monday’s Vote

Monday’s election has left many people confused as to who will get to lead our next government.

Associate Professor of Political Science at Mount Allison University Mario Levesque says in a minority situation, the party with the most seats doesn’t always win.

Brian Gallant is still the Premier until he resigns or until his government is terminated by the Lieutenant Governor.

“Mr. Gallant has the right, even though he has one less seat, it doesn’t matter, he has the right to meet the house and try to gather enough support for his platform and his agenda for his speech from the throne going forward.”

Levesque expects that Blaine Higgs is trying to put pressure on Gallant to resign so then he can go ahead and try to form the government before the Premier gets the chance.

In Brian Gallant’s speech last night he indicated that he would not resign, “He wants to meet the house and have the opportunity to try to gain their confidence. That will likely happen within the next month. Then if he maintains the support of the majority, he will continue to govern.”

The Progressive Conservatives were elected in 22 ridings last night, Liberals in 21. The Green and Peoples Alliance parties both have 3 ridings each.
