City Of Moncton Looks At Red Light Cameras

It’s been more than 15 years since New Brunswick municipalities began pushing for legislative changes to allow the use of red light cameras, that’s according to City of Moncton transportation coordinator Stephane Thibodeau.

He adds the provincial Motor Vehicle Act states tickets can only be issued to the driver of the vehicle, and they want that to change to the owner, “In New Brunswick, our Motor Vehicle Act stipulates that the person who is driving the vehicle much be served during the actual violation. But in other provinces the Motor Vehicle Act, allows it that if someone does do an infraction with respect to the rules of the road, they can get a ticket by mail, instead of being served on site.”

Thibodeau says this system has really no upfront costs and maintenance costs will be covered by fines, “A lot of the other municipalities, they don’t even own the cameras. It is usually a different company that comes in and provides that service, and it is user pay, there is no upfront capital cost to it at all.”

Thibodeau says they’ve been trying to get these legislative changes made for more than 15 years.
