Christmas Tree Safety Tips

A dry tree can be a dangerous tree, especially if it is near a heat source.

Live Christmas trees must be kept watered or they will dry out.

Fire Prevention Officer Steve Richardson says if a spark hits them, they can go up in flames very quickly.

He says it can take under a minute for the tree to be fully engulfed, and the fire will quickly spread in your home.

Richardson says keep your tree away from space heaters, candles, lamps and anything else that could potentially start a fire.

He says you should also check your string of lights before putting them on the tree. He suggests laying them out and looking them over, making sure there are no cracks, or loose or split ends in the wires.
