Childhood Burns On The Rise At IWK

The burn team at the IWK Health Centre has noticed an increase in childhood burns over the past year.

Nearly 35 children have been treated for scald injuries caused by hot liquid spills and another 24 have involved infants and young toddlers touching a hot object such as the glass of a fireplace or a heater.

Health Promotion Specialist with the Child Safety Link Program, Chantal Walsh, says close supervision is needed on children especially in the kitchen.

“Keeping pot handles in, hot liquids on the counter and try not to be drinking hot liquids when holding a child.”

She says, you should also be aware when your child is near an open flame.

“Attraction to a flame or anything hot like that is extremely high. If there is a fireplace burning or a candle lit, that is going to attract them even more.”

Other tips include keeping matches, lighters and curling irons out of the reach of children.
