City Council voted to make some changes to the way sidewalks are plowed in the Hub City last night.
Only one sidewalk will be plowed on collector roads, reducing the length of sidewalks to be plowed by 22 kilometres – which will save the City about $35,000.
City Director of Public Works Don Morehouse says this change is an opportunity to streamline their operation and provide a more efficient service.
“It also helps us from the road point of view because it provides us with the ability to widen the roads on one side of the street because there’s a place to store the snow instead of the slower and more expensive process of loading and hauling snow,” says Morehouse.
Not everyone agreed with the change with Councillors Shawn Crossman, Brian Hicks and Daniel Bourgeois voting against it.
Councillors Hicks and Bourgeois questioned how reducing service could be a benefit to taxpayers.
