Ceremony to commemorate Dieppe Raid today

DIEPPE, N.B. – A special ceremony will take place in Metro Moncton today to mark the 72nd anniversary of the Dieppe Raid of World War Two.

The City of Dieppe and the Dieppe War Veterans Association will commemorate the raid with a military parade of veterans, music by the Dieppe cadets, speeches, and a wreath laying ceremony.

The event will take place at Place 1604 in front of the veterans’ monument at 1:30 p.m.

Jessica Hache with the city says the ceremony will look similar to the one that takes place on Remembrance Day.

“It’s kinda the same thing, but just for remembering the raid of Dieppe that happened in France.”

The raid saw 913 Canadian soldiers killed and two thousand others captured as prisoners of war.

Dieppe changed its name from Leger’s Corner in 1946 to honour the Canadian soldiers who died.
