Cause Of North End Odour Remains Unknown

An “unpleasant smell” affecting residents in the North End has yet to be identified by the City of Moncton.

The municipality is now collaborating with the province’s Department of Environment and Local Government to help identify the source and find a solution, according to the City of Moncton Facebook page.

Comments on social media describe the scent as “putrid” or “foul”, with some residents stating the smell is so bad they avoid that area of the city as a whole.

TransAqua, Eco360 and other organizations in the North End have been contacted regarding the odour. TransAqua is implementing changes to reduce potential odours at their composting facility, the city stated. This includes placing covers on the biosolids compost piles.

ECO360 has committed to assessing operations and determining if they are responsible for a notable odour that has worsened in the past year.

The Department of Environment and Local Government is expected to create a plan to assess odours and will likely visit sites in the area to provide an update once the COVID-19 case counts decrease.
