As the legalization date for recreational marijuana fast approaches, many employers may be concerned about cannabis in the workplace.
Large companies and organizations such as Air Canada, RCMP and Canadian Armed Forces have already unveiled cannabis policies.
However, the same may not be true for small businesses.
Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton CEO John Wishart believes a lot of confusion exists right now.
“Can I ask an employee who I think might be impaired to submit to a drug test? Can I send them home? Where is that line of workplace safety versus the rights of the individual?” he asks.
Wishart says some small companies are undoubtedly writing their own cannabis policies since many wouldn’t have in-house support from a lawyer or human resources department.
