Canada Revenue Agency Warns Of Increase In Scam Phone Calls

The Canada Revenue Agency is issuing a warning about an increase in telephone scams pretending to be from the agency.

They involve aggressive and forceful callers threatening taxpayers to pay a nonexistent debt to the CRA.

The caller requests immediate payment by credit card, or convinces the taxpayer to buy a prepaid credit card and call back immediately with the information.

The threats often include jail time, court charges, or even deportation.

The CRA says they never request prepaid credit cards, nor do they ask about your passport, health card or driver’s license.

If you get a call like this, you should hang up immediately and report it to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
