Keep Your Distance From Canada Geese

Canada Geese and residents must co-exist – especially this time of year as the waterfowl seek breeding and nesting grounds.

Moncton Parks Department operations director Dan Hicks urges everyone to stay away from the geese.

“Please don’t interact with them in any way and that includes feeding them – that is a sure way they’ll show up in large numbers and when they do that it’s bound to create conflict.”

Hicks says we should let them rely on their natural feeding cycles.

Canada Geese can also become quite aggressive particularly with their goslings nearby.

“When they have young is when you want to keep your distance because they’ll take that as a threat. They have been known to be quite aggressive and if you’ve ever had one come after you it’s not a comfortable feeling at all.”

Hicks adds the Parks Department certainly doesn’t have a vendetta against Canada Geese.

But in an effort to discourage them, the city has erected fencing and added low-powered lights which flash at night near Jones Lake and Centennial Park.
