Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau spoke in Moncton about government decisions that are helping middle class Canadians.
He touted the Canada Child Benefit, a program launched a year ago by the Liberal government to help support families.
“In this community there are 15,000 kids who benefit from the Canada Child Benefit,” says Morneau. “So for those kids living in this community, we did the math, their families receive on average $570 each month, tax free.”

Morneau says that means those families are getting money they can put towards summer camp, or music lessons or even something else.
“It makes an enormous difference, and what’s it done across Canada, is this year, we’ll have 40% less child poverty in this country than we did just a few years ago,” says Morneau.
He says they knew it would also help the economy because “when you help families that need more money to get by, you increase the amount of disposable income in the economy, and the kind of effects we thought would happen, are indeed happening.”
Morneau also spoke about proposed changes to the tax system to ensure everyone is paying their fair share.
