When conditions are stormy outside the last thing you should be thinking about is grabbing your car keys and getting behind the wheel – but what if you don’t have any other choice?
Gary Howard of the CAA Atlantic says if it comes to that and you absolutely have to drive during wild winter weather there’s a few things you should consider.
Howard says if your vehicle has a switch from automatic to manual that can actually work better than braking because your vehicle is doing all the work not your brakes.
You should be taking your time and if you skid don’t do anything drastic just release your foot from the gas slowly until you can straighten out. He says completely cleaning off your vehicle, being aware of your surroundings and showing some common courtesy to other drivers will help you on your journey.
He also reminds you that posted speed limits are for ideal conditions only and says that you should adjust your speed to local weather conditions and warns police can actually ticket you if you’re not doing so.
