Boys And Girls Club In Dieppe To Launch Giant Steps Program, Thanks To Funding From Giant Tiger

A new homework support program will be launched next month at the Dieppe Boys and Girls Club, thanks to a partnership with Giant Tiger.

The business is investing $150, 000 that is being divided between 14 clubs across the country.

Executive Director Bob Hebert says they’ll receive around $9000, “We believe we will be able to run the program at least until the end of December, and hopefully take us into March or April. With any luck, it will take us up right until the end of the school year.”

Hebert says they have about 525 members of the Club. Around 40 of them will benefit from the Giant Steps program.

Hebert adds, “We ran a similar program before, but because we are a bilingual club, we could only afford one tutor who was bilingual. That meant a heavy workload. We hope with this additional funding, we will be able to hire another tutor, and in turn have one French and one English.”

He says it is wonderful to see the excitement, when the kids are working with the tutors, “When you are sitting down watching these kids, and I have seen adults the same way, it is like taking a 60 watt lightbulb and it clicks to 100 watts, it’s they say finally I got it! It’s great for the kids.”

The Boys and Girls Club in Saint John is the only other club in New Brunswick that will benefit from this partnership.
