Boxing Day Madness Slightly Less “Mad” This Year

Despite shopping exhaustion and turkey comas, Boxing Day sales remain a big attraction for shoppers on the lookout for post Christmas bargains.

However, Jim Cormier of the Retail Council of Canada says part of the frenzy around Boxing Day has dissipated.

He says it can be attributed to the advent of Black Friday sales – which has proven to be a win win for everyone.

“For years, you’d end up with all of this extra inventory as of December 27th, that you only had basically four days until the end of the year to try and get rid of,” says Cormier. “It’s also good for the consumer because it allows the consumer time to research what the best deal is.”

Another big change in the way people buy is the growing popularity of online shopping.

Growth is being driven by a rise in the use of tablet computers which make shopping from the sofa an attractive pastime.

To accommodate the growing segment of online shoppers – an increasing number of retailers begin their end of year sales online on Christmas Eve.

Not all retail stores will be open in Metro Moncton today – check our list below to find out who and what is open.
