Blown Transformer Starts Fire In Dieppe, Extinguished Quickly

The Dieppe Fire Department responded to a fire on Gauvin Road shortly before eight last night.

Captain Danny LeBlanc says a transformer had exploded and grass or debris underneath the power pole caught fire.

He says they immediately began extinguishing the fire on the ground but had to let the transformer burn itself out as spraying water on it would be dangerous.

One of their concerns was the fire spreading to a nearby apartment building, but he says they got the fire under control in less than half an hour.

LeBlanc says nobody was injured, and NB Power will determine the extent of the damage and what repairs need to take place.
