It’s an ongoing problem right across the country, a shortage of males who want to be role models for little brothers.
It’s having a major impact on Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Moncton.
The organization currently has 52 little brothers on a wait list, who will have to wait for up to two years to find a Big Brother.
But for the girls, the waiting list only has 12, and they’ll wait only six months to find a match.
Executive Director Peter Macdonald says the wait time is difficult for the boys, “By the time we have a Big Brother for them, they have become disinterested, and don’t want to have one anymore.”
He says they’re unsure of exactly why they don’t have more males volunteer as Big Brothers.
