An expansion of the Beausejour Curling Club is underway thanks to funding from all three levels of government.
Curl Moncton vice president Jacques Robichaud says this allows them to double their current capacity to ten sheets of ice.
“With five sheets of ice, you can’t grow your programs, you can’t go forward so an extra five sheets, we’ll be able to grow our training program, and accommodate more youth curling because we were sort of at a maximum to accommodate youth curlers when we were down to five sheets,” says Robichaud.
He adds this additional space will allow them to ensure the future of curling in the area.
“We had a school program going when we had ten sheets of ice, and we put a hold on that because we couldn’t accommodate any more curlers,” says Robichaud. “So with an extra five sheets we can bring back those school kids into this, and that’s where the future is, it’s not with people our age, it’s with junior curlers.”
Robichaud adds the project will also increase accessibility, and all work should be complete by next February.
The federal government is investing $300,000 under the Community Infrastructure Program, while the Government of New Brunswick is providing $500,000 and the City of Moncton is contributing $706,400.
