The Atlantic Salmon Federation is speaking out against what it claims is too much secrecy surrounding the escapes of farmed fish as well as when they come down with disease.
The Federation believes the public needs to be made aware of such information.
The Executive Director of Research and Environment for the Federation, Jonathon Carr points to the escape of 51 thousand farmed fish near Grand Manan in late January even though most of them wouldn’t survive the winter chill.
He warns if just a few survive, the gene pool of wild Atlantic salmon would get weaker and lessen their chances of survival.
The Federation would like to see land based closed containment fish farming operations, Failing that, it’s calling for the code of containment practices be improved.
