The beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season is right around the corner.
While June 1st is the official start date, tropical systems can form in May although few gain enough strength to become hurricanes.
The Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says Atlantic Canada is rather fortunate during the first half of the season.
“Typically in Atlantic Canada when we look for hurricane threats, the water temperatures are far too cold in the late spring and early summer months. Most infamous storms tend to happen in late August, September, and of course, early October.”
The Canadian Hurricane Centre tracked five named storms in our region last year including Hurricane Larry which hit Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula in mid-September.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre will be releasing its seasonal outlook on Tuesday afternoon.
