Atlantic Canada’s First Digital Cathedral

Residents and visitors alike will have the chance to take part in a unique experience in Moncton.

The Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption has become the first and only digital cathedral in Atlantic Canada.

It goes by the name of MR21, or Monument de la Reconnaissance du 21e siècle.

Executive director, André Bourgeois says it features an eclectic mix of styles.

“But the immersive show really is the highlight and I think that everyone, when they leave the theater, will feel that they’ve had their money’s worth,” says Bourgeois.

The cathedral was nearly torn down when a number of groups stood up to preserve it.

Bourgeois says the new features help educate visitors on the rich history of the monument.

“So its got all of this architectural value and in addition to that it also has a very important historical significance for Acadians, because this is where the first archbishop was named when Moncton became the centre of the archdiocese,” Bourgeois says.

He adds they have many more ideas including virtual reality that they will be adding to the cathedral in the coming years.

The attraction is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 1 p.m.to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Bourgeois says the immersive experience is something you just have to see to believe.
