The bodies of astronauts, when they return to earth from spending time in outer space, take quite a beating.
That revelation from Chris Hadfield who stopped off in Saint John this week. Hadfield says the body has to do a lot of readjusting to what he calls “the tyranny of gravity”. This includes regaining muscle strength and balance but the longest lasting effect is on onset of osteoporosis.
Hadfield is being studied by the medical people at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston on how long it takes to get the bone density back to where it should be.
