Afro Fest Is Coming To Dieppe

A new festival that hopes to promote the African culture is coming to Dieppe.

It’s called Afro Fest.

President of the New Brunswick African Association Saa Andrew says ceremonies will represent the cultures of several African countries.

“It will showcase Africa in itself, that Africa is not just black and white. Africa is very diverse and we want to showcase its diversity here in the province. We’re going to be doing workshops on identity, because of how diverse we are getting. We’ll have them on women empowerment as well. We’re going to do children/youth activities and we’re going to do drums and dancing, with food and music. We’re going to have a huge celebration.”

The festival will be held on October 5 and 6th, at Place 1604 on Friday night, and a gala is planned at Casino New Brunswick on Saturday.

Andrew says, “The theme this year is AfroUnity, because Africa is so diverse and we have so many of our people here, we believe that is we are all united that we can make a great contribution to the province of New Brunswick.”

Afro Fest was held in Fredericton in previous years, but Andrew is hoping if things go well, they may be able to form a partnership in Dieppe.

“People from all across the country attend. We have see people come from Alberta to attend,” Andrew says.

The first year they saw around 300 people, but that grew to around 800. Andrew is hoping for over a thousand this time around.
