Moncton Anti-Mask Protests Return To Peaceful

Anti-mask protests at City Hall started in the early stages of the pandemic and it’s likely they continue until the very last restrictions are lifted.

While the majority have been primarily peaceful, City Council updates from Codiac regional RCMP Superintendent Tom Critchlow showed a change of pace.

Over a handful of fines were given out weekly and altercations between officers and protestors resulted in arrests. Now weeks removed from the incidents and according to Critchlow, the situation has improved.

“Since the enforcement actions that we took, the protests have been following guidelines,” he said.

Protestors are required to maintain physical distancing and use masks in situations where they cannot.

Critchlow added that since the violent disputes in January, there have not been any arrests.

People protesting are generally members of the community that are unhappy with mask policies, Public Health guidelines and the media’s portrayal of the pandemic.
