Man Pleads Guilty In Campbellton Area Homicide

A 43-year-old man originally from the Campbellton area has plead guilty to charges in the homicide of 71-year-old Lucille Maltais.

Charles Alex Maltais appeared in court on Monday and plead guilty to one count of manslaughter and one count of arson.

The charges stem from an incident on October 22, 2016, when Campbellton RCMP were called to a house fire on Rue Melanson in Val-d’Amour, after firefighters found the body of a woman inside.

The victim was identified as 71-year-old Lucille Maltais.

The investigation determined the fire had been deliberately set and her death was deemed a homicide.

On May 22, 2019, as a result of a joint operation between the New Brunswick and the British Columbia RCMP, Charles Alex Maltais was arrested in Richmond, B.C.

He was charged with second-degree murder and arson and was remanded into custody.

He is scheduled to return to court on February 19, 2021, for his sentencing.
