Moncton Council Applauds Rising Tide

Moncton city councillors all seem to agree that provincial support of the Rising Tide Community Initiative is a great way to end a challenging year.

The City agreed to spend $6 million on the much-needed affordable housing project last month as long as the provincial government matched those funds which it did on Monday.

Council applauded the efforts of city staff and the volunteers behind Rising Tide which aims to create 125 affordable housing units throughout Moncton over the next three years.

Rising Tide co-founder Dale Hicks says the group will be approaching the federal government as well seeking long-term sustainable funding.

Councillor Bryan Butler believes this is one item he helped move forward that will stick with him for a long time.

“Given the poverty and related social issues in the city, it’s great to be able to say we were part of this.”

Councillor Blair Lawrence admits it’s not an easy task to serve as many needs as possible but the city has challenges that need to be faced.

While a lot of large impactful decisions are made by council, Councillor Charles Leger feels this has been the most rewarding one.

Leger called this a proud moment but acknowledged that the heavy lifting has only just begun.
