WorkSafeNB is looking into an incident where a construction worker became trapped in the basement of an uptown Saint John building for at least 20 hours.
“We are following up on this incident and cannot comment at this time,” said WorkSafeNB in an emailed statement sent on behalf of Florence Flower, acting executive director of corporate communications.
Emergency crews were called to 61 King Street on Wednesday afternoon after another construction worker found his colleague stuck.
The man in his 20s became wedged in the small space sometime on Tuesday, but no one else was aware.
Barry Oickle, a platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, described it as a difficult rescue as none of the firefighters could get into the space, which was about 60 centimetres long and 45 centimetres wide.
Firefighters removed carpet and flooring from the business above the man and were eventually able to free him around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
He was transported to the hospital by paramedics to be checked out.
