Wearing a face mask will be mandatory in all municipally owned and operated buildings as of September 28th, after the policy was unanimously approved by Moncton City Council.
Fire Chief Conrad Landry says most staff are already wearing masks and this will reinforce what is already in place.
“It’s a simple measure, something fairly easy to do and some research has shown it can reduce by 30 per cent the risk of transmitting the virus. So, 30 per cent with this and 30 per cent by staying home if you’re sick, eventually it come up to a high percentage,” he says.
Landry noted that masks are not mandatory in New Brunswick but anyone who refuses to wear one must maintain two metres distance, as the law indicates.
Councillor Shawn Crossman hopes that with the provincial election out of the way, we can consider similar laws as Nova Scotia around masks inside all public spaces.
Landry says the developed the policy to make sure it was as generic as possible that if, God forbid, in two or threes year there’s another virus we can just adopt this policy in the same fashion.
