Virtual Event Highlights Moncton’s History

You have a chance to learn more about some of the city’s historic buildings during the first ever Moncton Heritage Week!

Member of the city’s heritage conservation board, Paulette Thériault says they created a virtual event that combines all of their yearly heritage events.

She says although it was a challenge to produce, it allows them to reach a far greater audience.

“So we discovered a silver lining in this crisis,” she says.

Board member Jean-Pierre Charron says they’ve created a virtual program which includes webinars and a virtual ‘Doors Open’ event.

“We’ll highlight a selection of three remarkable heritage properties, offering participants a unique behind the scenes experience,” says Charron.

This year’s featured buildings are the Empire Block (Sept. 23), Albion Block (Sept. 24) and Castle Manor (Sept. 25). Tours will be streamed on the Resurgo Place Facebook page at 2pm, with a live discussion during each broadcast.

There will also be a scavenger hunt that will allow participants to re-discover downtown Moncton through its public art and heritage buildings, while searching for the answers to a questionnaire.

Additionally, two new heritage plaques will be installed, one at 92 Victoria Street, built in 1878 and another at 134 Church street, built in 1911.

Charron says these plaques are intended to provide public recognition for buildings designated under the heritage conservation by-law.
