A cycling advocate believes the City of Moncton needs to do better when it comes to active transportation.
Alex Arseneau recently told council the city has an opportunity to be more resilient during the current pandemic and the climate crisis.
“If we continue to think the fundamental basis of commerce is a car, we will run into a wall ecologically and economically,” noted Arseneau.
Mayor Dawn Arnold said the city is updating its active transportation plan.
Arseneau was disappointed over the abrupt removal of a bike lane on Main Street before the pilot project ended along with a bike lane on Mountain Road.
He believes motorists are being accommodated while the lives of cyclists and pedestrians are being endangered.
Arseneau thinks incentives are needed to promote cycling and to get more residents to use public transit.
He also suggested a bicycle registration system be implemented to help victims of bike theft.
Moncton director of leisure services Jocelyn Cohoon says such a system had been in the works but has been delayed by the pandemic.
