Everyone Invited To “Stand In Solidarity” For Those Affected By Beirut Blast

Members of the Moncton Lebanese Association will offer their support to those affected by this week’s massive explosion in Beirut.

Over 150 were killed, and over 5000 injured.

Spokesperson Lamia Chami says hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless, including many of her friends and family.

“As Lebanese people living here in Moncton, when you are far away, it is really frustrating that you can’t be there. Looking at the images on the TV, I want to be there, helping people, bringing food for them, but I can’t do anything,” Chami says.

She says this is their way for the large community of Lebanese people, along with others, to come together.

Chami says the support on Facebook, and the calls to the Association have been overwhelming.

“I was so touched by the messages and phone calls that I got from my Canadian friends and the community. It’s incredible. We are so lucky to be here in Moncton. People are so kind,” Chami says.

The Stand in Solidarity event will be held outside of Moncton City hall starting at 5 o’clock on Friday, August 7th.

Masks and physical distancing will be enforced.

Chami adds, “The Lebanese people have been through so much in their entire lives, but this was the strongest they have been. One of my friends, her house was completely destroyed but she said, my kids are good, and we can build a house again.”

Details will be posted on the Moncton Lebanese Association Facebook page later tonight, on how others can offer their financial support to those in need in Lebanon.
