Changes To Moncton’s Water Leak Relief Program

The City of Moncton is making adjustments to its water leak relief program, to help lift some of the financial burden off customers who experience major leaks.

Spokesperson Melanie Thériault, says about 43 hundred residents currently use the the online utility portal which gives then the ability to track daily water usage.

Despite an email notification system, she says a customer may not always be notified in time to avoid a costly bill.

The City currently provides residential customers with the ability to receive a one-time water leak adjustment of $100 to be applied to their account for leak relief.

“A review of this of this process was prompted due to some of customers receiving very, very large bills. Over the past 18 months, we’ve processed 50 water leak reliefs, 48 which were residential and most of these leaks were less than a thousand dollars,” Thériault says.

They are now looking instead to provide a one-time, 50 per cent relief per location to a maximum of one thousand dollars.

Thériault says the new program would cost the city about 10 thousand dollars more, something she says can be absorbed in the current utility operating budget.
