Indoor Cannabis Facility Denied In Upper Coverdale

The minister of environment has denied a request to rezone land to industrial in Upper Coverdale for a micro-cannabis company.

Gina Brown and her partner own Anchor Cannabis on Route 112 and wanted to construct a building for indoor cultivation on their farm.

Brown says she wasn’t surprised to recently receive a lengthy letter from minister Jeff Carr outlining numerous reasons why the rezoning was denied including available water sources and community concerns.

“I mean we will continue and just adapt as the regulations evolve I guess,” she says.

Brown says it’s a bit of a setback but she notes how they are at the mercy of government regulations.

During the rezoning process earlier this year, many neighbours voiced opposition to the project which included odours from such a facility or a drop in area property values which were both cited in the minister’s letter denying the request.

Brown says her property is still agriculturally zoned and growing outdoors is still allowed.

From a business standpoint, she adds nothing can be done yet because they haven’t received a license from Health Canada which she says is a lengthy process.
