Extremely Warm Temperatures A Concern For The Homeless

The recent heat wave has prompted concerns for Moncton’s homeless population.

There are currently about 175 individuals sleeping rough in and around the downtown area, according to the city’s general manager of recreation, culture and events.

Catherine Dallaire says these individuals are especially at risk in the extremely warm weather.

She noted how many public buildings with air conditioning, such as the library, remain closed to the public.

“There are discussions underway to try to provide potential some ability for a drop in centre for the day, to find a locations where they can cool off,” she says.

Dallaire says while shelters are welcoming fewer guests overnight due to certain COVID-19 restrictions, they aren’t at full capacity.

She says the city is continuing to focus on creating affordable housing options, since many are still choosing to sleep outside.
