Moncton Chamber Wants NB-PEI Border To Reopen

The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton has asked the province to reopen New Brunswick’s border with Prince Edward Island in mid-June.

Provincial officials have suggested it may not happen until July.

CEO John Wishart says the Chamber wants an earlier reopening since both provinces have been successful in flattening the curve of the pandemic.

“We are a retail and shopping hub and a lot of Islanders do come to Moncton and Dieppe. You just have to look at the license plates at Champlain Place or Costco and realize that,” Wishart says.

He doesn’t believe all New Brunswickers will flock to the Island although he thinks the province will benefit because it does well in the summer.

Wishart feels Southeast New Brunswick has a lot to offer and while staycations are great, he adds tourism operators will need more visitors to help sustain them over the season.
