Firefighters Battle Challenging Structure And Grass Fires In Dry And Windy Conditions

An abandoned barn style building on McLaughlin Drive in the Ammon area has been destroyed by fire.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Charlie Melanson says they arrived on scene at around 11pm last night to find the structure fully engulfed, and the flames beginning to spread to the dry grassy area surrounding it.

Firefighters from St. Paul and Dieppe Fire Departments were called in to to help with getting the fire under control, and also with a tanker truck to bring water to the scene.

Melanson says, it was a windy night, but they were able to get the fire under control, but it took around three hours to extinguish. They were able to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby wooded area.

Because of the dry conditions, firefighters had to return to the scene at around 4am this morning after reports of flare ups.

Route 490 was also blocked off by RCMP for several hours to keep onlookers away from the scene,

An investigation is underway to determine a cause.

A reminder from fire departments across the province that conditions are very dry right now, and there is a burn ban currently in effect. A spark on a dry grassy area can spread very quickly. You can check the NB forest fire watch for updates, that are done at 2pm everyday.
