UPDATE: Cars And Boats Destroyed By Fire On Gorge Road

Three boats and two vehicles being stored on Gorge Road have been destroyed by fire.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Dennis Dollemont says reports of a garage fire near Crandall University came in at around 6:30pm tonight.

He says the location is a boat storage and repair shop. Sailboats, speed boats, personal watercraft, and other vehicles were being stored on site.

When firefighters arrived, the building, cars and three watercraft were fully engulfed. Dollemont says because there was gasoline involved, it made the fire more challenging to fight.

Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the air, from kilometres away.

Dollemont says they managed to hook into the last hydrant on Gorge Road and ran 200 metres of fire hose to provide water to fight the flames.

Fifteen firefighters battled the blaze for around an hour before it was finally brought under control.

A section of Gorge Road was blocked by RCMP, while firefighters were on scene.

Dollemont says there’s no word on what caused the fire yet.
