Southeast Jail Inmate Dies In Custody

A 37-year-old inmate has died while in custody at the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac.

Officials say Derek James Whalen was taken to the Moncton Hospital on Sunday where he was pronounced dead.

Whalen was being held on remand awaiting a court appearance.

The incident and cause of death are being investigated by RCMP and Coroner Services.
