COVID-19 Pandemic Won’t Stop Moncton Paralympic Swimmer

Paralympic swimmer Danielle Dorris is continuing to train even without the CEPS pool at Universite de Moncton.

It was closed around two weeks ago due to COVID-19.

Four years ago, she went with her mom to buy a hot tub, but they ended up with something else..

“Let’s just say, we didn’t end up with a hot tub. We more ended up with an Infinity pool, where I can feel the water. It has a tether on it, and a giant jet, so the water can push against me so I can swim against it.”

That’s what Dorris is using while she is unable to access a pool, due to the pandemic.

“It is very different from swimming in a real pool. In an actual pool, I can do the flip turns, I can do the push off the wall, and the dives, but in the swim spa all you can really work on is resistance work.”

She also spends time doing dryland training and using an eliptical trainer most days.

Before COVID-19 closed facilities across the province, Dorris swam five to six times a week, up to two hours a day, with Club de Natation Bleu et Or in Moncton.

With the Paralympics now postponed until 2021, she remains optimistic.

“I try to just keep my spirits up. I am very happy go-lucky kind of person, go with the flow kind of girl. I try to think of the positive all of the time,” Dorris says.
