YMCA Offers New Program For Adults With Dementia

The YMCA of Greater Moncton is inviting adults with dementia to take part in a new program.

Program coordinator Shannon Geldart say as of next month, they’ll be offering a modified version of their adult day program.

Geldart says people living with dementia have confusion around daily activities they once knew how to do.

She says many residents with the disease have expressed a need for a place where they can participate in brain-stimulating activities and be part of a community, while also giving caregivers a bit of a break.

“A study done on Alzheimers.ca found that two thirds of caregivers find it very isolating to be a caregiver so we felt that this program was a good opportunity to provide a bit of respite for family members and general caregivers,” she says.

She also says that Atlantic Canada accounts for 7 per cent of the country’s population that has dementia.

Beginning March 9th, program run will run every Monday from 8:30 to noon.

Cost of the program is $16 a day, which includes all equipment and material as well as a snack and tea or coffee. They are also offering a one day free trial for those who qualify.
